Navigating a Shifting Technological Landscape
Our technological landscape continues to shift and morph. I’ve been excited (and sometimes overwhelmed) by the volume, effectiveness, and sheer range of AI tools that already exist—and the ones rumoured to be just over the horizon.
As AI continues to reshape how we work and learn, it’s increasingly clear: we must ensure AI serves learning, not the other way around.
The Reality of AI in Regulated Workplaces
A lot of my work takes place in highly regulated environments where staff must maintain critical skills and comply with strict standards. Here, AI’s role isn’t limited to surface-level productivity boosts in content creation.
Instead, integrating AI and automation into my learning design workflows has opened up more opportunities to focus on what truly matters: the people the learning is for.
It’s also worth separating AI’s potential in learning design from automation’s role in improving efficiency. Both are valuable—but they serve different purposes.
SustAIning Performance in a Changing world
Here’s what I find most compelling: AI isn’t just about making things faster or offloading tasks.
When used well, it allows me to inject more humanity into the learning experience. I get to move beyond compliance checklists and into building real rapport, trust, and motivation.
And those aren’t soft perks—they’re the foundations of meaningful, sustained performance change.
Equipping and Empowering
In a world captivated by innovation, I’m increasingly convinced that we need to double down—not just on speed or automation—but on accessibility, empathy, and human connection.
It’s encouraging to see AI opening the door to more of this, rather than less. After all, if learning design isn’t creating real-world impact for people, what’s the point?
Efficiency, Productivity and Problem Solving
In the end, businesses don’t care about training content for its own sake. They care about solving problems, driving results, and enabling their people to perform.
When my work reduces training time while improving engagement, I’ve seen first-hand how frontline staff can do more of what they do best—treating the sick, rescuing people, or guiding their workforce through change.
That benefits everyone.
Human-Centred Innovation: A Guide for Designers and Leaders
It’s these kinds of measurable outcomes, many of which I’ve detailed on my website, that keep me invested in using an ever-expanding toolkit—leveraging digital innovation for human flourishing.
If you’re exploring how AI can support, not replace, the human side of learning, I’ve created a free guide that dives deeper into this approach.
